Backyard Discovery Beaumont 14 x 10 cedar pergola

Best wood pergola

Material
100% cedar, pre-cut, pre-drilled and pre-stained
Size
14 x 10 ft; 5.5 x 5.5 in posts
Wind rating
Tested to 100 mph when anchored as the manual specifies
Extras
PowerPort with 3 outlets and 3 USB ports (power supply not included); resin post feet with concealed concrete anchors
Warranty
5 years
Price seen
$1,599 at Overstock

The Beaumont is the kit to beat if you want real wood. Cedar resists decay without chemical treatment, the parts arrive pre-stained, and the 100 mph wind test is a strong figure for a wood kit at this price. The built-in power port is a genuinely useful extra for lights or a speaker. It is an open trellis roof, so plan on a shade sail or climbing plants if you want more cover.

Pros

  • Cedar at a mid-range price
  • 100 mph wind test when anchored
  • Built-in outlets and USB ports

Cons

  • Open roof gives partial shade only
  • Wood needs resealing over time
  • Ships in several heavy boxes

Purple Leaf louvered aluminum pergola

Best value louvered roof

Material
Powder-coated aluminum frame
Sizes
10 x 14 ft up to 14 x 24 ft
Roof
Two independently adjustable louvered sections, tilting 0 to 90 degrees
Drainage
Hidden gutter; water runs down through the four posts
Wind rating
Up to 72 mph when secured with expansion screws to a hard surface
Price seen
From $2,513 at Overstock

Purple Leaf brings the louvered roof, the feature that turns a pergola into an all-weather room, down to a price that many standard cedar kits reach. Closed, the louvers shed rain into the built-in gutters; open, you get sun and airflow. The 72 mph wind rating is lower than our premium pick's, and the retailer listing does not give a snow rating, so it suits milder climates best.

Pros

  • Adjustable rainproof roof at a mid-range price
  • Wide choice of sizes
  • Integrated drainage

Cons

  • Lower wind rating than premium kits
  • No snow rating listed
  • Needs a hard, level surface for anchoring

Hansø Pro+ aluminum louvered pergola

Best for wind and snow

6063-T5 aluminum, 3-layer powder coat
Sizes
10 x 10, 10 x 13, 13 x 13 and 13 x 19 ft
Roof

Mounting
Freestanding or wall-mounted
Price seen
$3,978 for the configuration shown, plus $395 shipping; 12 to 14 week lead time

Hansø is the pick for exposed or snowy sites. Its 120 mph wind certification and 25 PSF snow rating are the strongest published figures among the kits we compared, and the 10-year warranty is double the Beaumont's. The louvers are cranked by hand, which means no motor to fail, but also no remote control. Expect a long wait: the listing showed a 12 to 14 week lead time.

Pros

  • Highest wind and snow ratings we found
  • 10-year warranty
  • Freestanding or wall-mounted

Cons

  • Most expensive pick, plus shipping
  • Long lead time
  • Manual louvers only on this model

Sunjoy 9.5 x 11 ft steel arched pergola with canopy

Best on a budget

Material
Powder-coated steel frame with corner braces
Size
9.5 x 11 ft, arched roof
Shade
Removable 180G fire-retardant polyester canopy, adjustable on each side
Use
Manufacturer describes it as for decorative and sunshade use; remove the canopy in high winds and winter
Price seen
$234 on sale ($390 regular) at Tractor Supply

If you want shade over a small patio this summer for a few hundred dollars, the Sunjoy does the job. The canopy adjusts on each side to follow the sun. Be clear about what it is, though: a light steel frame for sun shade, not a permanent structure. The manufacturer says to take the canopy down in high winds and over winter, and buyers report it takes several people to put up.

Pros

  • Very low price
  • Adjustable canopy gives real shade
  • Can screw down to a wooden deck

Cons

  • Not built for wind, rain or snow
  • Canopy comes down seasonally
  • Fabric will need replacing eventually

How to choose a pergola kit

Match the roof to your weather

An open rafter roof gives partial shade only. A fabric canopy adds shade but must come down in storms. A louvered roof is the only kit option that keeps off rain and stays up year-round. If you are unsure which you need, start with pergola vs gazebo.

Check the ratings against your location

Wind and snow ratings matter more than looks if you live somewhere exposed. Compare the published ratings, and remember they only apply when the kit is anchored exactly as specified.

Plan the base first

Every kit needs a solid, level base: concrete footings, a pad, or a deck's structural frame. If you need to pour concrete, add that to your budget and timeline.

Measure the usable space

The listed size is usually the roof. The space between the posts is smaller, so check the interior dimensions against your furniture plus room to pull out chairs.

Common questions

What is the best material for a pergola kit?

Cedar is the best choice if you want natural wood that resists decay. Aluminum is best for low maintenance and is the standard for louvered roofs. Steel kits with fabric canopies are the cheapest but are designed mainly for sun shade, not bad weather.

How long does it take to assemble a pergola kit?

HomeAdvisor estimates 1 to 4 hours for prefabricated kits once the base is ready, but large kits often take a full day. Plan on at least two people, and more for heavy beams or roof panels.

Do pergola kits need to be anchored?

Yes. Wind ratings only apply when the pergola is anchored exactly as the manual specifies, usually to concrete footings, a concrete pad or a deck's structural framing.

Can a louvered pergola handle rain?

Yes, when the louvers are closed. Good louvered kits route water into gutters and down through the posts. Very heavy downpours can still overflow, so check the drainage design before you buy.
