An outdoor refrigerator must handle heat, sun and humidity that would defeat an indoor fridge. We compared models on their outdoor certification, ambient temperature range, venting, capacity, warranty and price, using manufacturer specifications and retailer listings. We have not tested these units ourselves; see how we research.

One thing to check first: some compact fridges sold for outdoor kitchens are indoor units. While researching this guide we found a popular 20-inch model listed as "Indoor Compact Refrigerator" by a major outdoor kitchen retailer. Always look for an outdoor certification (UL, ETL or CSA) in the specifications.

The Danby is the affordable way to keep drinks cold on a covered patio. It is built for outdoor conditions, with IPX4 splash protection, a lock and casters so you can roll it into place. It is a freestanding undercounter unit with a mechanical thermostat, not a premium built-in, and the listing does not state the venting design, so check the manual before enclosing it in a cabinet. One buyer noted it struggled to stay cold in winter, a reminder to check the ambient range for your climate.

How to choose an outdoor refrigerator

Confirm the outdoor certification

Look for UL, ETL or CSA outdoor certification in the specifications. The certification mark, not the stainless finish, is what shows a fridge is built for outdoor use.

Check the ambient temperature range

This tells you how hot and cold the surroundings can get while the fridge still works properly. If you live somewhere very hot, look for a high upper limit; if you get frosts, check the lower limit and the winterizing instructions.

Front venting for built-in installs

A fridge built into an island needs to breathe through the front. Rear-venting units need open space behind them and should stay freestanding.

Door, drawers and lock

Drawers are easier to use at counter height; a single door fits taller bottles. A lock is worth having if children or neighbors can reach the patio.

Placement

Keep the fridge out of direct afternoon sun and away from the grill's heat where you can. Shade from a pergola or gazebo helps it run more efficiently.

Common questions

Can I use a regular mini fridge outside?

It is not a good idea. Indoor fridges are designed for room temperatures, so on a hot patio they run constantly and struggle to stay cold, and they are not built for moisture. Some popular compact fridges sold for outdoor kitchens are actually indoor-rated, so check the listing for an outdoor rating.

What does outdoor rated mean for a refrigerator?

It means the fridge has been certified for outdoor use, usually by UL, ETL or CSA, covering electrical safety and performance in outdoor conditions. Look for the certification in the specifications, along with the ambient temperature range the fridge is designed for.

Do outdoor refrigerators work in winter?

Each model has a minimum ambient temperature in its specifications. Below that, many owners empty, unplug and prop open the fridge for the season. Follow the manufacturer's winterizing instructions.

What size outdoor refrigerator do I need?

Most outdoor kitchen fridges are 20 or 24 inches wide with about 4 to 5 cubic feet of space, enough for drinks and prepped food for a cookout. Check the cutout dimensions if you are building it into an island.
